One of the ways to make sure that your wedding cake have that shimmer that the jewel-decked bride is demanding is to use the perfect wedding cake decorations. Although inedible, crystal cake ribbons will give the wedding cake that extra sparkle that it needs while it is on display. When it comes time to cut the cake, these cake ribbons will provide enough sparkle under the light to make every other woman present jealous that this cake wasn't theirs.
The problem that most brides have in ordering the specific crystal cake ribbons that they desire is that they don't know how much to order. These ribbons need to be used on every tier of the cake, all the way around, or the wedding cake decorations are going to have a lopsided and sloppy appearance. The two basic styles of wedding cakes, square and circular, will be discussed here.
Square Cakes
The square cake is the easier of the two types to measure out lengths for crystal cake ribbons for. To begin, you will need to know the length of one side of the cake on every tier. It is important to remember that every tier must be measured and added into the equation or you won't have enough decorations when the time comes.
Start with a sheet of scrap paper, not the one that the wedding cake decorations will be ordered on, and write down the width of one side of the cake. On a square cake, each of the sides will end up being the same length. Because of this, you will add the length of the one side four times, or multiply the length of one side by 4.
For an 18 inch long cake, you will calculate 18x4=72 inches. Remember to add all four of the sides together. If you accidentally forget a side, the measurements will be off.
This must be repeated for every layer of the cake individually. Be sure to record the final measurements for each tier. For the 16 inch layer, the math will be 16x4= 64. The 12 inch layer will be 12x4=48, and the 8 inch layer will be 8x4=32.
When the totals are complete, they must be added together to form a single amount of total inches for the cake. 72+64+48+32=216. So, the four layers of the cake will need 216 inches of cake ribbons to completely surround them.
Round Cakes
On a scrap paper, record the width, across the center of the layer of round cake, of each tier and write this down. Once these numbers have been recorded, the calculations become easy.
Each layer of cake must have its width across the center multiplied by 3.14. So, the 18 inch wide circular cake will be 18x3.14=57 inches. Always round up to the next inch to make measuring easier. This will make the 16 inch layer 16x3.14=51, the 12 inch layer 12x3.14=38, and the 8 inch layer 8x3.14=26.
Add the four calculations together to get a total inches for wedding cake decorations going around the four tiers: 57+51+38+26=172 inches.
Inches To Yards
Whichever type of cake you have, you will need to turn your inches calculation into yards before you can order your crystal cake ribbons. First, divide your total by 12 to find the feet of your total. 172/12=14.3 feet.
Once you know the feet, divide this by 3 to find the yards. 14.3/3=4.7. Round up. That will give you how many yards will be needed to order to make that wedding cake sparkle. Calculate carefully, and do the math twice, so that there will be enough ribbon to decorate the entire cake.
